Risk Assessment & Hygiene Surveys

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999* (COSHH) regulations 6,7 and 8 require that you undertake a risk assessment and prevent or control the exposure of your employees to substances hazardous to health by using suitable control measures which includes general ventilation, maintenance, examination and testing of the control measures (for example general ventilation) to meet the requirements of regulation 7 are covered by regulation 9.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 L24 require building operators ‘to regularly clean, test and maintain mechanical ventilation and air conditioning systems to ensure they are free from anything which may contaminate the air’.

The initial assessment of the systems condition and identification of risk is the first step for existing plant. This forms the basis for a programme of works, which may include cleaning, disinfection, upgrading and routine monitoring, to ensure the risk to employees and the general public are minimised.
